Reach Out and Read Iowa Participates as one of the Prairie Meadows Community Outreach Non-Profits at the 2012 Des Moines Arts Festival

Reach Out and Read Iowa had a wonderful response to our activity booth at the Des Moines Arts Festival, including great community volunteer participation from many groups including United Healthcare, Wellmark, Ames Raising Readers and Rotary, University of Iowa medical students, Dowling Reach Out and Read Club, the Reach Out and Read Iowa Advisory Committee, and providers from several Reach Out and Read programs.

Reach Out and Read Iowa volunteers talked with several people about the program, including librarians, at-risk reading teachers, elementary school teachers, parents, literacy advocates, and a local tv station who passed along a packet of information to one of their reporters for a possible story idea.

We are grateful for the support of our volunteers and everyone who stopped by the booth. Thank you again!

Reach Out and Read Iowa Receives a 20,000 book donation from Hewlett-Packard and Weekly Reader Publishing

A wonderful collaboration took place at the end of May 2012 culminating with the sorting and boxing of 20,000 donated books. Several Des Moines businesses helped make this donation a possibility for our early literacy non-profit Reach Out and Read Iowa.

Hewlett-Packard(3600 Army Post Road), in partnership with Weekly Reader Publishing, donated 20,000 books to Reach Out and Read Iowa at the end of April. The donation of nine children's hard cover titles included the classics Goodnight Moon, Curious George, and Paddington Bear.

Because the 20,000 books consisting of nine titles were stacked freely on pallets it was necessary to sort and box the books in order deliver them to one of the 89 Reach Out and Read programs in Iowa.

The coordination of this project really highlighted the generosity of Des Moines area business. Hewlett-Packard worked with Advance Delivery to deliver the 20,000 books free of charge to Borgen Systems where the book sorting and boxing would take place. Borgen Systems generously donated a portion of their unused warehouse space for this project. Reach Out and Read contacted Blues Care Giving at Wellmark to post a need to volunteers for the project. Wellmark in return offered to provide 100 volunteers for the book sorting/boxing project and donated all the boxes.

On Friday, May 18 at a little before 1:00pm volunteers began arriving at Borgen Systems. By 3:00pm they were finished with boxing and loading about 1/2 of the books to be delivered to Des Moines area Reach Out and Read programs and brought to Reach Out and Read's storage bin, also donated by Quality Resource Group.

The retail value of the donation is over $300,000. The value of the volunteers and businesses is priceless. Reach Out and Read is incredibly proud and appreciative of all who worked to help put books in the hands of young children.
