Read Out & Read Iowa

Reach Out and Read Iowa is part of a national organization dedicated to providing young children a foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care and encouraging families to read aloud together.

We are also a member of the Iowa Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Our primary role is to serve children infancy through 5 years, especially children growing up in poverty who are at risk for reading and school difficulties.

The families we serve read together more often, and their children enter kindergarten with larger vocabularies and stronger language skills, better prepared to achieve their potential.

The Reach Out & Read Model

Doctors, nurse practitioners, and other medical professionals incorporate Reach Out and Read's evidence-based, three-part model into regular pediatric checkups:

  1. Medical providers speak with parents about the importance of reading aloud with their children, starting in infancy.

  2. At each regular checkup from six months through age five, the child receives a new age- and culturally-appropriate book to take home.

  3. Many Reach Out and Read program sites create literacy-rich environments that include gently-used books for waiting room use, with volunteer readers to model reading aloud for parents.

We are dedicated to promoting literacy as an integral component of children's health care, to helping all children grow up with books. Fostering emergent literacy skills helps children enter school with a love for reading and readiness to learn.
